UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 26 September 2007



This is a broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste to provide you with information about the security situation around the country.

The security situation in Timor-Leste has been generally calm, but disturbances continue in the Bebonuk neighbourhood of Dili.

Earlier today in Dili, UNPol attended five incidents, including two incidents of rock throwing: one in Comoro, and one in Matadoro. Police, including Formed Police Units (FPUs), brought both situations under control. One UN vehicle sustained minor damage in the process.

Separately, at around 08:30hrs, approximately 35 people armed with sling shots and arrows attacked the community living near Bebonuk primary school. A Formed Police Unit responded swiftly and dispersed the attackers, and there were no reports of any injuries.

On Tuesday in Dili, police used four cans of teargas whilst attempting to control a group of approximately 50 people who were fighting in Bebonuk. A 12-year-old boy sustained minor injuries in the fight and was taken to Dili Hospital.

Also on Tuesday in Dili, police received a report of a critically ill newborn baby in Atauro. The international security forces (ISF) were contacted, and they sent a helicopter to the island to bring the baby and its mother back to Dili hospital. The baby is reported to be in a stable condition. 

On Tuesday in Bobonaro, police arrested three suspects in a case of assault and attempted robbery that took place on Sunday, 23 September.

On Tuesday in Ermera, a house was set on fire in the sub-village of Riheu. All eleven occupants of the house managed to escape unharmed. Police have identified a suspect in the case, who is thought to be mentally ill.

This is a broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste to provide you with information about the security situation around the country.

The security situation in Timor-Leste has been generally calm.

Earlier today in Dili, UNPol attended nine incidents, including a disturbance in Balide High School at around 08:30hrs. One teacher sustained minor injuries to his face, and will be lodging a complaint with the police against several students from the school. Police also attended a protest against the Commission of Truth and Friendship that took place outside of the CAVR office. About 50 people took part in the protest, which remained peaceful.

On Monday in Dili, police arrested five people, two for possession of a weapon, two for assault and one for rock throwing.

In Same on Monday evening, a group of approximately six people threw rocks at three UNPol vehicles after blocking the road toprevent them from passing. One UNPol officer fired a warning shot whilst attempting to disperse the group, who were reported as being drunk. Another UNPol officer also sustained a minor injury to his leg. Police are investigating.

This is a broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste to provide you with information about the security situation around the country.

The security situation in Timor-Leste has been generally calm.

Earlier today in Dili, UNPol attended five incidents, including a disturbance outside of the Department of Solidarity. UNPol responded and discovered that the confrontation was caused by a disagreement between an employer and former employee. The employee was referred to Dili District Police Headquarters to lodge a complaint.

On Sunday in Dili, police received a report of fighting near the Comoro Roundabout. Upon arrival, police encountered seven youths armed with machetes and iron bars, and fired one warning shot whilst trying control the situation. One person was arrested, and two iron bars were recovered.

Separately, three people were arrested in Fatuhada for rock throwing.

In Ermera on Sunday, two people sustained minor stab wounds in the market area of Ermera town and were taken to Gleno hospital. The injuries were inflicted as they tried to stop a group of youths from stealing from their stall.

This is a broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste to provide you with information about the security situation around the country.

The security situation in Timor-Leste has been generally calm, but there have been incidents of unrest in Viqueque and Lautem.

On Thursday, a fight broke out between two groups in Viqueque. Police, the international security forces (ISF), and soldiers from the Falintil Defence Forces (F-FDTL) responded and brought the situation under control. One Formed Police Unit (FPU) vehicle was damaged in the process, and police fired nine tear gas cells to control the crowd. There were no reports of any injuries.

Also on Thursday, three houses were set on fire in the village of Leuro, Lautem, after a domestic dispute between brothers. The owner of the houses also sustained minor injuries to his face. Police have identified the suspects.

Earlier today in Dili, UNPol attended two incidents, including a fight between two groups near Comoro roundabout. Police and the ISF responded and brought the situation under control. One man sustained a head injury and was taken to Dili Hospital, but his condition is not thought to be serious. 

The situation in Dili on Thursday was calm. One person was arrested on charge of attempted murder in Bebonuk, but there were no other reports of significant incidents.

UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 20 September 2007



This is a broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste to provide you with information about the security situation around the country.

The security situation in Timor-Leste has been generally calm.

Earlier today in Dili, UNPol attended seven incidents, including a fight between two men in Comoro. Police arrested one man, and took the other to hospital to receive treatment for a head injury.

The situation in Dili on Wednesday was calm. Police arrested one man for rock throwing in Aimutin. 

In Watulari on Wednesday, the PNTL Rapid Intervention Unit (UIR) arrested a further suspect in connection with the arson attacks in Viqueque in August. Police had an arrest warrant for the suspect from the Prosecutor-General. The suspect, who is a PNTL officer, has now been transferred to Baucau. A total of eight people have been arrested this week in Viqueque in connection with arson attacks.

On Wednesday in Gleno, a man was seriously wounded in a domestic dispute. He has been taken Gleno hospital, and police have arrested his brother-in-law.

In Baucau on Wednesday, police responded to a report of a robbery in Seiçal village. They made a total of 14 arrests in connection with the robbery and managed to recover a stolen goat.

This is a broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste to provide you with information about the security situation around the country.

The security situation in Timor-Leste has been generally calm.

Earlier today in Dili, UNPol attended six incidents, including a robbery at the house of a UN Police Officer in Fatuhada and a drunken fight between two men in Mascarenas.

The results of the Dili University entrance examination were also released today. Police were on alert in case of any associated disturbances, but the situation remained peaceful.

There were sporadic incidents of rock throwing on Tuesday in Dili, but the situation in the district remained generally calm. Police arrested seven people: three in Fatuhada for possessing illegal weapons, two on suspicion of theft in Formento, and two for causing public disturbances in Caicoli and Kampung Baru.

Two houses were destroyed by fire on Tuesday in Viqueque district; one in Vesuro village and one in Afolcai village. No-one was injured in either fire, and it is not yet known whether either fire was started deliberately. Police are investigating.

Also on Tuesday, police received a report of a fight taking place in Ermera town. Police were dispatched to the town and brought the situation under control. Some witnesses reported hearing gunshots, but police, with the support of the international security forces (ISF), have been searching the area and have been unable to find any evidence of a firearm being used.
