The 2006 Crisis

This site was inspired by the events that culminated in the tragic disintegration of the rule of law in 2006. UNPol was remobilised in response to the political violence and social tensions and this is an archive of the regular security reports.

UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 8 December 2006

Yesterday afternoon and evening, eighteen people were arrested in the Kampung Baru area for possession of offensive weapons. Several knives were seized and the people were taken to the Dili Detention Centre.

Apart from those incidents, it has been reasonably calm, with few reports of disturbance to community peace and security. Reports from the districts of Timor Leste also indicate that it has been quiet there.

We ask again for everyone to keep calm and remain apart from gang rivalries. Contact the police as soon as you have any information that might help us prevent further confrontations. Use the emergency line 112, a toll free number to contact us.
