UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 22 December 2006

The situation in Dili remains relatively calm, with some sporadic outbreaks of violence around Dili.

Yesterday, during the morning, a fighting incident in Don Bosco area led to UNPol intervention. In the afternoon, the WFP was targeted by a large group of people who threw rocks against the warehouse in Bebonuk. One hundred people were involved in the theft of 100 bags of rice.

During the night, in Kampung Baru, two martial art groups were preparing to fight when the police appeared and the rivals groups fled away.

We remind you to not use explosives or fireworks. It disturbs peoples rest and it may put your physical integrity at risk. This is dangerous fun and you puts your and others lives in danger.

Remember that during rainy time, you should avoid travel in motorcycle. If are in need to do so, always travel slowly, with the lights on. Where an Helmet that really protects your head and wear a vest with bright colors, so that you are clearly visible to other drivers.
