UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 11 June 2007



This is a broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste to provide you with information about the security situation around the country.

The security situation in the country as a whole has been calm.

Today in Dili, UNPol conducted 41 patrols and attended to a total of seven incidents. In the morning, rocks were thrown at a convoy of approximately 20 microlets travelling from Comoro station to the Government building to protest about the price of petrol. Some of the drivers also threw rocks at other microlet drivers who did not participate in the convoy.

In Viqueque yesterday, UNPol recovered items that were stolen from the house of two UNPol officers on Saturday, including one firearm. An investigation is underway.

Also yesterday, UNPol reported providing security to ten political rallies in the districts of Aileu, Ainaro, Baucau, Bobonaro, Ermera and anufahi. There were no reports of any security incidents related to the campaigning.

The Police advise to avoid traveling during the night to the most affected areas. Report any suspicious activities and avoid traveling the areas affected by disturbances. Call 112 or 7230365 to contact the police 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
