UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 14 February 2007



Yesterday, there were two cases of arson in Hudilaran, behind Radio Falintil. Both fires were extinguished and no injuries reported.

In Taci Tolu, during the afternoon, a group of two hundred people got involved in a rock fight. The group dispersed on police arrival and the situation returned to normal. During the incident, a man had his microlet stolen.

Later, in Bairro Pite, several groups of people started a rock fight and obstructed the roads to access the neighborhood. The patrol units, with backup from Portuguese and Malaysian FPU, cleared the area and avoided the escalation of violence.

In the night, violence erupted in Taibessi area, when groups from two villages confronted each other. Two houses were burnt, and one police vehicle damaged by a rock. There were no injuries and the situation was quickly reestablished.

In Bairro Pite, the ISF arrested two persons for setting road blocks and for possession of illegal weapons.Disturbances were also registered in the following areas: Santa Cruz, Bidau Lecidere, Pentai Kelapa and Bairro Pite, where a case of arson destroyed a house.

Today, the day has been relatively quiet. There was a case of fighting and arson in Bemori, but no injuries reported. The peace rally gathered 50 vehicles and about 1000 people than crossed some of the city main roads, finishing in Independence Park, without any incident.
