The situation in and around Dili has mostly been calm with
no serious security incidents related to presidential campaigning.
UNPol responded to campaigning in Dili today by increasing
its number of patrols. 100 were conducted between approximately 6am and 3pm.
Two significant security incidents took place today. In the
first, UNPol responded to reports of road blocks in the vicinity of the
Australian Embassy this morning. No road blocks were found, but rock fighting
had begun and two UNPol officers received minor injuries. The officers brought
the situation under control by firing two warning shots.
Later, at around midday, UNPol responded to reports of
fighting between rival supporters in Tasi Tolu. UNPol dispersed the crowds, and
ensured 5 injured people were taken to hospital. None of the injuries were
serious.
Yesterday, election rallies and meetings took place in Dili,
Baucau, Ermera, Lautem, Liquica, and Oecussi. All passed without incident. Also
in the Districts, medical examiners have confirmed that a woman whose body was
recovered from a river in Suai died from drowning.
The Major Crime Investigation Unit has been concentrating on
finding witnesses and locating suspects in seven murder cases. Once located,
the Unit has arrest warrants for the suspects and will take them into immediate
custody. Separately, the Prosecution Support Unit has received two notifications
to serve in Ermera.
The Police advise that you should avoid traveling during the
