UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 19 October 2007

The security situation in Timor-Leste has been generally calm.

Earlier today in Dili, UNPol attended three incidents, including an incident where a group of 10 to 15 people were reported to be throwing rocks at shops in the Audian area. UNPol discovered that the incident was due to a dispute over land ownership, and took the complainants to the Bureau of Land Representation.

Separately, workers digging a pit latrine near Dili hospital discovered four unexploded hand grenades around midday. Explosives experts from the international security force (ISF) and a Formed Police Unit (FPU) have responded and are at the scene.

Dili remained calm on Thursday. Police arrested two people, one for assault, and one for rock throwing.

The security situation in Timor-Leste has been generally calm.

On Wednesday in Ermera, a domestic dispute in Latefoho sub-district resulted in the death of one man after his brother allegedly struck him several times with a machete. UNPol and PNTL investigators have attended the scene and are searching for the suspect.

Earlier today in Dili, UNPol attended six incidents, including a fight in Comoro involving a group of about 20 people. The group fled upon the arrival of the police.

On Wednesday afternoon, Formed Police Units and UNPol officers responded to reports of a fight near Comoro Market in Dili. A 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rock throwing. There were no reports of any injuries.

UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 17 October 2007

The security situation in Timor-Leste has been generally calm.

Earlier today in Dili, UNPol attended seven incidents, including a peaceful procession involving approximately 300 people that started at Palapaco and ended at the Ministry of Agriculture. The procession passed without any major incidents.

Dili remained mostly calm on Tuesday, although there were sporadic incidents of fighting and rock throwing in Hudilaran, Bairo Pite, and Surikmas. Two people were arrested for identification purposes in relation to a rock throwing incident and a theft.

On Tuesday evening in Metinaro, an unidentified assailant set fire to a shelter. Nobody was injured in the fire, and police are investigating.

The security situation in Timor-Leste has been generally calm.

Earlier today in Dili, UNPol attended six incidents, all of which were traffic accidents.

The body of a man was discovered in a house in Kuluhun, Dili, on Sunday. UNPol investigators are looking into the circumstances surrounding the death. It is not yet known whether the death was suspicious.

Later that evening, a man was injured after a group of ten youths fired a sling shot at him in Becora bus terminal. The victim sustained an injury to his cheek and neck, and was taken to Dili hospital.

Separately, police made six arrests in Dili on Wednesday, four for rock throwing and two for possession of a weapon.

On Saturday in Maliana, a house was burnt to the ground opposite the Formed Police Unit (FPU) compound. No-one was injured in the blaze, and its cause is not yet known.

The security situation in Timor-Leste has been generally calm.

Earlier today in Dili, UNPol attended three incidents, including a report of a fight between two women near Obrigado IDP camp. Police are investigating the circumstances around the fight. Separately, the international security forces (ISF) arrested a man in Bairo Pite for rock throwing, and handed him over to the police.

In Dili on Wednesday, police responded to a report of rock throwing in Bairo Pite. A large number of people gathered and tried to attack the police vehicle, and UNPol fired one warning shot to disperse the crowd. There were no reports of any injuries.

UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 10 October 2007

This is a broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste to provide you with information about the security situation around the country.

The security situation in Timor-Leste has been generally calm.

Earlier today in Dili, UNPol attended five incidents, including a report of a stabbing in Tasi Tolu. The victim sustained an injury to his right shoulder, and has identified the suspect to police, who are investigating the incident.

Dili remained calm on Tuesday. One person was arrested in relation to a rock throwing incident.

On Tuesday in Ainaro, a PNTL officer discovered an unexploded grenade near his house whilst working in a field. The area was cordoned off, and the grenade has been recovered.

On Tuesday in Bobonaro, the PNTL handed over two suspects in their custody to the Indonesian authorities. The suspects are wanted in connection with several criminal cases in West Timor.

On Tuesday in Maumeta, Liquica, a 47-year-old man set on fire two bales of clothing at the market after the owner of the clothes refused to pay him protection money. Police arrested the man, who was found to be in possession of a knife and a sling-shot.
