UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 4 September 2007



This is a broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste to provide you with information about the security situation around the country.

The security situation in Timor-Leste has been relatively calm, but the situation in Viqueque remains tense.

Today in Dili, UNPol attended five incidents, none of which were major. At 1010hrs approximately ten people entered a school in Fatumeta and threw rocks at the teachers. One of the teachers was injured and take to Dili hospital.

Around three hours later, two groups were involved in a fight in Kuluhun. The groups fled upon the arrival of the police. A man and a woman sustained minor injuries in the fight.

In Dili yesterday, two people were arrested  for assault in Bidau and Fatuhada, and one for possession of stolen property in Bidau Lecidere.

Early yesterday morning in Viqueque, an unidentified group threw stones at a house in Beloi village, breaking one window. Police are investigating.

In Manatuto, the Suco chief of Aiteas reported hearing gunshots two days ago in Lamsana. Police conducted an investigation at the scene and found the remains of an animal. No evidence was found of shots being fired or of any people being injured.

United Nations police officers in conjunction with the PNTL and the International Security Force remain fully deployed to respond to any disturbances that may emerge.
