The 2006 Crisis

This site was inspired by the events that culminated in the tragic disintegration of the rule of law in 2006. UNPol was remobilised in response to the political violence and social tensions and this is an archive of the regular security reports.

UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 19 December 2006

The situation in Dili during the past 24 hours has been relativity calm with only three minor incidents reported, namely rock throwing in Comoro area..

Yesterday, during the afternoon, the World Food Program Warehouse in Bebonuk was broken into and some goods were stolen. UNPol responded and collected information about the suspects.

Regarding the fighting incident in Kampung Alor last Sunday, we remind that people should remain calm, and that they should trust the UNPol. The case is being investigated by the National Investigations Department from UNPol and all efforts are being made to discover the truth about what happened on that incident and how the Timorese male died.

The security forces and the judicial system are operating in coordination to grant total transparency to this process. To establish the facts surrounding this death, it is vital that an autopsy is conducted. Only if the bullet is recovered one can determine without any doubt what type of firearm, if that was the case, was used to cause the death in Kampung Alor on Sunday. I would like to appeal to the family, to consider allowing the autopsy so that the truth can be established.
