UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 21 June 2007



This is a broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste to provide you with information about the security situation around the country.

The security situation across the country has been calm.

Today in Dili, UNPol conducted 47 patrols and were required to attend two incidents. Both were minor traffic accidents.

Yesterday in Dili, at about 1935hrs, UNPol received reports of a house set on fire in the Comoro area, south of the Landmark supermarket. UNPOL and the fire service attended and extinguished the fire. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the blaze.

Yesterday in Manatuto, PNTL received a report of an individual threatening to use a hand grenade in Manatuto town. The individual in question was immediately located and arrested, and the device was confiscated.

The same day in Ermera, at around 0100hrs, a man was stabbed in Dosmagar sub-village. The victim has been transferred Dili hospital by ambulance. A group of three people are being sought in connection with the attack.

An identification parade took place in Dili Dentention Centre yesterday with regards to a murder that took place in Becai on 5 December 2006. The suspect was identified by the witness and police have forwarded details to the Prosecutor’s office.

Campaigning continues across the country today. Eight political rallies were reported to have taken place yesterday, and there were no reports of any associated security incidents.

The Police advise to avoid traveling during the night to the most affected areas. Report any suspicious activities and avoid traveling the areas affected by disturbances. Call 112 or 7230365 to contact the police 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
