UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 30 April 2007



This is a broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste to provide you with information about the security situation around the country.

The security situation in the country as a whole has been calm.

Today in Dili, UNPol conducted a total of 46 patrols and were required to attend eight incidents. The incidents included a rock fight at approximately 0730hrs, which UNPol controlled without injury or arrest.

In Metinaro sub-district, UNPol received reports of a person being electrocuted within the compound of Metinaro school at around 0915hrs today. UNPol requested that the electricity be cut off, and the victim was taken to Dili hospital with serious burns.

Yesterday in Maubisse sub-district, at approximately 0400hrs, a vehicle containing six Portuguese teachers and one Timorese tumbled into a ditch, injuring all of the passengers, three of them severely. All of the passengers are now in Dili hospital.

In Oecussi, UNPol and PNTL received reports of a murder in Ausnak Village. The victim was killed whilst walking through bushes on his way to the main road. Investigators attended the scene and arrested the suspect, who they found in possession of the murder weapon.

Across the country, the two remaining Presidential candidates are continuing their campaigns for the second round of elections. So far, there have been no serious security incidents linked with the campaigning.

The Police advise to avoid traveling during the night to the most affected areas. Report any suspicious activities and avoid traveling the areas affected by disturbances. Call 112 or 7230365 to contact the police 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
