UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 26 June 2007



This is a broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste to provide you with information about the security situation around the country.

The security situation across the country has been generally calm, although warning shots were fired by the International Stabilisation Forces (ISF) and F-FDTL in an incident yesterday evening in Dili. The security situation in Ermera also remains tense.

Yesterday evening in the Caicoli area of Dili, a group of youths threw rocks at F-FDTL personnel near the Timor Telecom compound. The F-FDTL personnel responded by firing warning shots into the air. The ISF received reports of shots being fired, and arrived near the scene to investigate. In the process of securing the telecom compound, the ISF believed that they were coming under fire and also fired two warning shots. There were no injuries. The ISF, F-FDTL and UNMIT are all conducting investigations into the incident.

In Ermera yesterday, the house of a 50-year-old man was attacked by a group of people in Ermera Vila. One television set and several windows were broken by rocks, and the man sustained a minor injury to his hand. UNPol and a Formed Police Unit responded  nd brought the situation under control. The suspects have been identified, and police are investigating.

Today in Dili, UNPol conducted 44 patrols and were required to attend four incidents, including a traffic accident and a minor assault. None were serious.

Campaigning continues across the country today. Eighteen campaign events were scheduled for today, and there have been no  reports of any associated security incidents as yet.

The Police advise to avoid traveling during the night to the most affected areas. Report any suspicious activities and avoid traveling the areas affected by disturbances. Call 112 or 7230365 to contact the police 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
