UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 06 June 2007



This is a broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste to provide you with information about the security situation around the country. The security situation in the country as a whole has been stable.

Today in Dili, UNPol conducted 33 patrols and attended a total of six incidents. Four of these were traffic accidents. Of the remaining two, one was a fight between two groups in Bairo Pite at around 1130hrs. UNPol arrived and dispersed the group, and there were no reports of any injuries.

Eight political rallies took place yesterday in the districts of Ainaro, Bobonaro, Ermera and Lautem. The only campaign-related security incident that was reported took place in Lautem where when one political convoy was stoned by about 30 people near Cainliu, slightly injuring two campaigners. All the other rallies went peacefully.

UNPol is continuing its investigation into the alleged murders that took place in Viqueque last Sunday. Police officers supported by the ISF are searching for suspects by foot and air, and ballistics testing is ongoing.

The Police advise to avoid traveling during the night to the most affected areas. Report any suspicious activities and avoid traveling the areas affected by disturbances. Call 112 or 7230365 to contact the police 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
