This is a broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste to
provide you with information about the security situation around the country.
The security situation across the country has generally been
calm.
Today in Dili, UNPol were required to attend only two
incidents. Both involved rock throwing. Near Bidau bus station, 50-60 youths
were attacking passengers on a Baucau-bound bus. Reports suggest that the
attack was retaliation for a small incident yesterday. UNPol, a Formed Police
Unit and the International Stabilisation Forces responded and quickly brought
the situation under control.
The second incident involved two children throwing rocks in
Kampung Alor, damaging the glass of a passing car. UNPol arrived and the
children ran away.
In Viqueque yesterday, UNPol was deployed to Uatolari
sub-district to respond to reports of youths fighting at around 0100hrs. They
found two seriously injured people who were then brought to Viqueque for medical
treatment. The local UNPol commander is working with PNTL to calm the situation
and arrest those suspected of being involved.
Yesterday, UNPol investigators continued their inquiry into
allegations of misconduct, including cases in Covalima and Oecusse. After
through investigation, the case in Oecusse has been deemed to be baseless, and
the situation has returned to normal in Covalima.
The Elections Security Plan will shortly be moving into
phase three, which covers Election Day 30 June. UNPol and PNTL will be deployed
at every polling centre. Mobile patrols will monitor the surrounding areas and
Formed Police Units will be available to rapidly attend any emergencies. These
measures are in place to ensure that all Timorese can vote without fear of violence
or intimidation.
The Police advise to avoid traveling during the night to the
most affected areas. Report any suspicious activities and avoid traveling the
areas affected by disturbances. Call 112 or 7230365 to contact the police 24
hours a day, seven days a week.
