UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 01 June 2007

The security situation throughout the country has been calm.

Today in Dili, UNPol conducted a total of 43 patrols and were required to attend six incidents. There were no major security incidents.

In Oecusse, two people received minor injuries from a man who attacked them with a machete. All three were drinking together when an argument ensued, resulting in the attack. Separately, one day previously, PNTL received reports of a house on fire. UNPol rushed to the scene and managed to rescue several possessions. It is not yet known whether the fire was started deliberately.

Two days ago in Baucau, at about 2000hrs, fighting was reported in Buibau village. UNPOL and PNTL responded and arrested one male. The cause of the fight is thought to be domestic.

Investigators from the Major Crimes Investigation Unit located and arrested the suspect in a case of attempted murder from last year. An identification parade was conducted with a witness and a positive identification was made.  The suspect remains in detention and all reports are being sent to the prosecutor.

The campaign period for the parliamentary elections is underway. There have been no reports of major security incidents related to the campaigning.

The Police advise to avoid traveling during the night to the most affected areas. Report any suspicious activities and avoid traveling the areas affected by disturbances. Call 112 or 7230365 to contact the police 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

This has been a daily broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste, for the people of Timor-Leste.
