UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 17 April 2007

This is a broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste to provide you with information about the security situation around the country.

The security situation around the country is calm.

The gas leakage in the vicinity of Dili Seaport is still a risk to health for those in the immediate vicinity. Consequently, UNPol is keeping the Seaport sealed and maintaining surveillance of the area. A GNR medic visited the Seaport IDP camp yesterday to inform IDPs of protective measures to take against the gas. IDPs were also told to watch out for symptoms that exposure to the gas might leave.

In Dili today, UNPol conducted 55 patrols and attended a total of six incidents. In one of the incidents, three people were arrested by the ISF for possession of traditional weapons. UNPol attended the scene and took the suspects into custody.

In the Districts, the body of a woman reported missing on 10 April was found in Lalaiya sub-district of Manatuto. The National Investigation Division is looking into the death, which is thought to be suspicious. Separately, a 17-year-old girl, Faustina Da Cruz, has been reported missing from her home in Ermera sub-district. Inquiries are being conducted by UNPol and the PNTL.

The Police advise to avoid traveling during the night to the most affected areas. Report any suspicious activities and avoid traveling the areas affected by disturbances. Call 112 or 7230365 to contact the police 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
