UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 23 April 2007



This is a broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste to provide you with information about the security situation around the country.

The security situation in Dili has been relatively calm.

Today in Dili, UNPol conducted a total of 53 patrols and were required to attend only four incidents. One was a fight between approximately 30 people in Balide. UNPol attended and mediated between the two groups. The situation is now calm.

Yesterday in Dili, UNPol received reports that approximately 500 people from the IDP camp and Bidau Toko Baru were provoking each other at Dili Hospital. UNPol, Formed Police Units and the International Stabilisation Force arrived at the scene and dispersed the crowd. Two people were arrested and there were no injuries.

Two nights ago in Gleno Market, Ermera, a violent confrontation took place between rival political groups. One person was injured in the knee by a steel dart, before police brought the situation under control. In a separate incident yesterday, a rock fight took place between two groups of youths near Perunas in Ermera. UNPol, Portuguese Formed Police Units and PNTL intervened and managed to disperse the crowds using tear gas. There were no injuries, but the situation remains tense.

Yesterday in Tirilolo, Baucau, seven people were arrested for vandalizing and stealing telephone wires, and one was arrested in connection for receiving stolen items. In Liquica, UNPol and PNTL are monitoring the situation in Faulara where villagers have expressed concerns about being attacked.

The Police advise to avoid traveling during the night to the most affected areas. Report any suspicious activities and avoid traveling the areas affected by disturbances. Call 112 or 7230365 to contact the police 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
