UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 26 March 2007



This is a broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste to provide you with information about the security situation around the country.

The situation in Dili has been calm, except for a couple of incidents of fighting in Fatuhada.

Today, UNPOL received five reports of incidents and responded to them all. In one incident, at 1040 UNPOL received a report of a crowd fighting in Fatuhada. One person, a male around 20 years, was injured in the fighting. Pakistani and Malaysian formed police units dispersed the crowd and took the injured person to Dili hospital. The other incidents were minor.

Yesterday, UNPOL responded to a report of people trying to provoke one another in the area near to the old airstrip in Fatuhada. Before fighting began, UNPOL managed to resolve the dispute with the assistance of village chiefs. Later, in the same area, an abandoned house was set on fire. The fire was soon extinguished by the Bomberos, and there were no injuries.

The Police advise that you should avoid traveling during the night to the most affected areas. Contact the police if you see anything suspicious or any kind of problems, and avoid remaining near any disturbances. Call 112 or 7230365 to contact the police 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
