UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 05 February 2007



The security situation in Dili is tense but under control.

On 3 February 2007, in Dili – in the early morning, another 2 houses in Fatuhada were set on fire. Allegedly the perpetrators are members of the 7-7 gang who decided to attack the owners, one of whom is a PSHT member.

On 3 February 2007, in Dili – in the afternoon, a female American National was robbed by two youths on a motorcycle, just in front of Ocean View Hotel at Bebonuk. They had pushed her and forcibly taken her handbag containing US$15 and a Nokia mobile phone. The victim sustained minor bruises on her left hand and foot.

On 3 February 2007, in Dili, at around 23.00 hrs, in Kuluhun, fighting between local civilians were reported and UNPOL patrols responded to the incident. Some darts, swords and arrows were confiscated by UNPOL.

On 4 February 2007, in Dili, in the early morning of 4 February 2007, fighting occurred in Kuluhun and Mascarinas. Police unit and FPU responded and arrested a total of 5 persons for identification purposes.

On 4 February 2007, arrest warrants received by the National Investigations Department (NID) in relation to a Murder of PNTL Officer (off-duty), committed last 21 Jan ’07, when he was attacked by a gang at Perumnas, Bairro Pite.

Two suspects have been arrested by NID Investigators and enquiries are underway to locate and arrest a third suspect are currently being undertaken. A fourth suspect has been named. Enquiries are underway to locate and positively identify this person.

The Strategic Information Department continues with their efforts to gather information pertaining to the martial art gangs.

The UNPol Close Protection Unit continues to provide escort and protection to the President of Parliament, Minister of Interior, Former Prime Minister, Deputy SRSG and Police Commissioner.
