UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 24 August 2007



This is a broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste to provide you with information about the security situation around the country.The security situation in Timor-Leste as a whole has been calm, although Viqueque and Lautem remain tense.

Today in Dili, UNPol attended six incidents. At around lunchtime, a young man died after falling from a moving vehicle in Banana Road. Eyewitnesses report that the vehicle did not stop after the man fell. Police have tracked down the owner of the vehicle and are investigating.

Yesterday in Ermera, a 12-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy were killed when their house in the sub-village of Lekau burned to the ground.  A 22-year-old neighbour sustained minor injuries to his wrist whilst trying to apprehend the person suspected of starting the fire. Police have arrested the suspect and are investigating further.

In Liquica yesterday, a house in Ediri sub-village burnt to the ground. Police have investigated and determined the cause of the fire to be accidental. Nobody was injured in the fire.

United Nations police officers in conjunction with the national police of Timor-Leste (PNTL) and the International Stabilisation Force (ISF) remain fully deployed to respond to any disturbances that may emerge.
