UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 28 August 2007

This is a broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste to provide you with information about the security situation around the country.

The security situation in Timor-Leste as a whole has been calm, but the situation in Viqueque and Metinaro remains tense.

Today in Dili, UNPol attended six incidents. These included an incident in Metinaro, where rocks were thrown at a passing bus. Police brought the situation under control and are monitoring the area. One person was injured in the attack and has been transported to Dili hospital.

Early this morning, a gang fight took place in Pantai Kelapa. Police attended and dispersed the gangs. Three people were injured in the fight, including a 29-year-old man who is in a critical condition after being stabbed in the back.

Last night in Metinaro, three houses in the vicinity of the IDP camp were set on fire. Formed Police Units and the International Security Force (ISF) responded and prevented the incident from escalating.

A total of four people were arrested in Dili district yesterday, three for rock throwing in Metinaro and one for rock throwing in a separate incident in Bebonuk.

Yesterday in Viqueque, a 25-year-old man was assaulted in Ailembata village. National police (PNTL) arrested three suspects in connection with the assault, and were intending to transport them to Baucau court today. In Viqueque town, supporters of a political party attempted to block the road outside of their party headquarters at around 1600hrs, but police attended the scene and persuaded them to remove the road block.

In Lautem yesterday, rocks were thrown at the district administrator’s office during a political protest in Los Palos. Police responded quickly to stop the throwing, and the remainder of the demonstration was peaceful. There were no reports of any injuries or damage to property.

Two days ago in Baucau, PNTL received a report of a case of arson in Samalari village. Police are investigating.

United Nations police officers in conjunction with the PNTL and the ISF remain fully deployed to respond to any disturbances that may emerge.

The Police advise to avoid traveling during the night to the most affected areas. Please report  any suspicious activities.  You can call 112 or 7230365 to contact the police 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
