This site was inspired by the events that culminated in the tragic disintegration of the rule of law in 2006. UNPol was remobilised in response to the political violence and social tensions and this is an archive of the regular security reports.

UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 05 October 2007

This is a broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste to provide you with information about the security situation around the country.

The security situation in Timor-Leste has been generally calm, although there has been a large explosion in Dili.

On Thursday night in Dili, there was a large explosion in the Defence Cooperation Programme (DCP) building near the Australian Embassy. The explosion damaged windows of the DCP compound and is thought to have been caused by a grenade. There were no reports of any injuries, and forensic investigators are examining the crime scene.

Separately, one person was arrested on Thursday night in Dili for assault.

Earlier today in Dili, UNPol attended seven incidents, including an alleged assault that took place near the Seaport. Both suspect and victim were treated in Dili hospital for minor injuries.

On Thursday in Bobonaro, police arrested a 15-year-old boy in Coelima village in connection with an arson attack that took place on 3 October 2007 in Samorapo village.

Early Thursday morning, four people were stopped at a PNTL checkpoint near Viqueque town and were found to be carrying knives or machetes. The weapons were seized and all four people received official warnings from the police.

The Police advise to avoid travelling during the night to the most affected areas. Please report any suspicious activities.  You can call 112 or 7230365 to contact the police 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
