UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 21 February 2007



This morning, a house and two vehicles were destroyed by fire in Bairro Pite and in the Comoro road.

After yesterdays theft of several bags of rice in the warehouses od febonuk and Bebora, the WFP Warehouses were again the scene of large crowds gathering in the hope of getting rice. UNPol has been providing security to the warehouses since yesterday, but at around 1400 the crowd broke the external walls of Bebonuk WFP warehouse, but was not able to enter the warehouse, due tom police intervention.

During the day nine (9) UNPOL vehicles have been damaged by people throwing rocks

Approximately, 600 people arrived at Dili during the night, coming from Same and Aileu to participate in MUNJ demonstration. Presently they are peacefully gathered in Dili Stadium

Yesterday, 48 persons were arrested for possession of illegal weapons and for identification in Bairro Pite junction and surrounds. Eight police units participated in the operation, during which one UNPol got a minor injury and two UN vehicles were damaged due to rock throwing.

Fightins occurred in Bairro Pite, kampung Baru and in Taibessi. During the day 79 people were arrested.

In the morning, a group of students organized a demonstration due to the rice shortage in front of the Government Palace. Two people were arrested for illegal demonstration and disobeying police orders.

The Ministry of Agriculture was under the attack of a group of people that was throwing rocks. The government building windows were broken but the situation was brought under the control by police intervention.

The Police advise the public to avoid the areas where these disturbances have been happening and to inform the police whenever they feel something suspicious.
