UNPol Daily Security Briefing 2 January 2008 - This is a
broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste to provide you with information about
the security situation around the country.
The security situation in Timor-Leste as a whole has been
calm, but two people were killed in two separate incidents in Dili on Tuesday.
In the early hours of Tuesday morning, police were called to
a disturbance on the Comoro Road. Upon arrival, officers patrolled the area and discovered the body of a man who appeared to have
been fatally stabbed. The investigation is in progress, and four suspects have
been arrested in connection with the case.
Also on Tuesday morning, a 21-year-old man was killed after
being stabbed in a fight in Tasi Tolu. Police are investigating, and have obtained statements from witnesses.
In the districts, several minor incidents of fighting and
assault took place over New Year's Eve and early on New Year's Day. Most of the incidents involved people who were under the influence
of alcohol. No serious injuries were reported, although there were a number of arrests, the exact number of which is still to be
confirmed.
Today in Dili, police attended five incidents, only two of
which were confirmed. The confirmed incidents were both minor traffic
accidents.
Dili remained calm last night, with only sporadic
disturbances. Police made seven arrests: three for rock throwing, and three for identification purposes in relation to an alleged assault.
