UNPol Daily Security Briefing 4 January 2008 - This is a
broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste to provide you with information about
the security situation around the country.
The security situation in Timor-Leste has been calm,
although heavy rains continue to cause problems in the west of the country.
Today in Dili, police attended seven incidents, including
two minor incidents of fighting in Tasi Tolu and Fatuhada. In both cases, the
suspects fled upon the arrival of the police. There were no reports of any
injuries.
Today in Covalima district, police received a report that
villagers from Matai were burning houses in the village of Kunain in revenge
for a fight that had taken place on Tuesday. Police arrived and dispersed the
crowds, arresting four people. A total of eight houses had been burnt. A police
taskforce has been set up to identify suspects, and UN Police and Border Patrol
Units (BPU) remain in the village to prevent further trouble.
On Thursday morning in Dili, a large fight involving
approximately 200 youths took place behind Bairo Pite police station. Police
brought the situation under control, but later that evening, the same youths
gathered and threw stones at a house occupied by several UNPol officers. None
of the officers were injured. Police are investigating.
On Wednesday in Orema village, Ermera, a 30-year-old woman
died and two people were injured when heavy rain caused a tree to fall on their
house.
The police advise to avoid travelling during the night to
the most affected areas. Please report any suspicious activities. You can call 112 or 7230365 to contact the
police 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
