UNPol Daily Security Briefing 7 January 2008 - This is a
broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste to provide you with information about
the security situation around the country.
The security situation in Timor-Leste has been calm.
Today in Dili, police attended four incidents, including
three traffic accidents and a minor assault upon a 21-year-old woman near
Comoro Bridge.
Early this morning in Dili, a 32-year-old man suspected of
being mentally ill entered the yard of the residence of former Prime Minister
Mari Alkatiri, and damaged three cars before being stopped by one UNPol and one
PNTL officer. The man was later arrested and taken to Dili District police
station. There are no reports of any injuries.
Separately, another two people were arrested in Dili last
night: one for causing a public disturbance in the vicinity of the Airport IDP
camp, and one for rock throwing in Balide.
On Sunday in Covalima district, police arrested ten people
in connection with the disturbances in the village of Kunain that took place on
Friday last week. Investigations are in progress.
Early on Sunday morning in Tilomar sub-district of Covalima,
police received a report of a fire in a house in Sadahur village. No injuries
are reported, and police think it is very unlikely that the incident is
connected in any way to the recent disturbances in Kunain village.
The police advise to avoid travelling during the night to
the most affected areas. Please report any suspicious activities. You can call 112 or 7230365 to contact the
police 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
