This site was inspired by the events that culminated in the tragic disintegration of the rule of law in 2006. UNPol was remobilised in response to the political violence and social tensions and this is an archive of the regular security reports.

UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 21 August 2007

This is a broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste to provide you with information about the security situation around the country.

The security situation in Timor-Leste as a whole has been calm, although Viqueque remains tense.

Yesterday, a PNTL patrol team arrested an escaped prisoner in Ainaro market place, Ainaro district. The suspect escaped from Dili custody last August in 2006. He had been charged with Attempted Murder.

Today in Dili, UNPol attended three incidents, including two traffic accidents. None of the incidents were serious.

Between 1055 and 1430hrs, a political rally was held in Dili stadium. The rally was peaceful and there were no reports of major incidents.

Yesterday in Viqueque, a group gathered outside the FRETILIN office in Viqueque town. UN Police and Formed Police Units (FPUs) were present and stopped the group from burning tyres and using them to block the road. There were no further problems reported.

In both Baucau and Lautem yesterday, political rallies were held without incident.

United Nations police officers in conjunction with the national police of Timor-Leste (PNTL) and the International Stabilisation Force (ISF) remain fully deployed to respond to any disturbances that may emerge.

The Police advise to avoid traveling during the night to the most affected areas. Please report any suspicious activities.  You can call 112 or 7230365 to contact the police 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
