The 2006 Crisis

This site was inspired by the events that culminated in the tragic disintegration of the rule of law in 2006. UNPol was remobilised in response to the political violence and social tensions and this is an archive of the regular security reports.

UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 20 March 2007

The situation in Dili remains calm. There were no significant security incidents in the past 24 hours. However, there is still a risk of problems in the Bairo Pite area, where UNPOL has increased its presence.

Today UNPOL responded to seven incidents. None of the incidents were serious; three were traffic accidents, and the remaining four were false reports of rock throwing and fighting. In total, UNPOL deployed 45 patrols in the last 12 hours.

The Major Crime Investigation Unit has made further progress in the case of a man murdered in Dili in March. Written statements were  obtained from eye witnesses and a further witness has been identified.

Outside of Dili, the investigation into the death of a man in Ermera over the past weekend continues. One suspect was interviewed yesterday, and statements have been obtained from three witnesses.

The Police advise that you should avoid traveling during the night to the most affected areas. Contact the police if you see anything suspicious or any kind of problems, and avoid remaining near any disturbances. Call 112 or 7230365 to contact the police 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

This has been a daily broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste, for the people of Timor-Leste.
