UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 29 January 2007



The general situation in Dili still remained relatively calm and peaceful.

On 27 January 2007, in the evening, the body of a male teen was found floating in the water, about five meters from the Mariner Beach, approximately 500 meters from the cemetery SE of Comoro airport. There were injuries on the deceased’s forehead, a swollen left eye and bleeding from the nose. The villagers pulled the body to the shore and UNPOL NID was called to the scene. Body was transferred to the Dili National Hospital for autopsy. Nobody has still made a claim on the victim’s body at the Dili Hospital’s morgue. Further investigation is going on.

On 27 January 2007, in the night, a suspicious male person was seen with a sword outside Harbour View Café. Upon arrival of UNPol, the suspect ran into the old Chinese Consulate IDP Camp and was arrested therein. He was sent to Dili Detention Centre and investigation is in progress.

On 27 January 2007, a woman who had a dispute with her female neighbour in Ermera, sustained machete slashed wounds on her left lower arm. Her husband, who came to her aid, was also slashed on his left and right lower arms. Both victims have received medical treatment. The female neighbour was arrested and is currently held at the Gleno Prison. She is waiting to be taken before the Judge at Dili Court.

On 29 January 2007, during the closing ceremony for the 1st UIR Intensive Training, the Prime-Minister, Dr. Ramos Horta, asked for a stronger Police action against the crimes committed by the gangs in Dili and exhorted the Police officers to arrest the perpetrators.
