UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 26 January 2007



In Dili, the modalities of violence have changed significantly, for instance, the suspects throw stones and disappear from the scene when the UNPOL comes in. This situation cannot be solved just through the means usually applied by UNPOL. Therefore, it’s necessary to find new ways of dealing with this problem and the Community can help the Police to capture the suspects by providing information to arrest them. So, in order to ensure sustainability of the good results achieved it would be great that all citizens could cooperate with the Police to give an adequate answer to the increasing needs of security.

On 25 January 2007, UNPOL investigators of the National Investigations Department arrested a suspect for homicide. He is accused of being the perpetrator of the murder of a Timorese male on Sunday, 21 January 2007, at around 11:00 am, at Ailoklaran – Dili. The victim was slash with a machete in the neck and also stabbed in the stomach. The suspect was taken before the Judge at Dili Court and is now at Becora Prison.

On 25 January 2007, PNTL officers from Aileu brought to Dili a suspect arrested for the murder of a Timorese male. He confessed to the Police that he killed the victim with a traditional spear. The suspect is waiting to be taken before the Judge at Dili Court.

On 25 January 2007, during afternoon the UNPOL investigators of Dili District went to Court with a suspect arrested for the rape of a Timorese woman. He is also suspect of being involved in other rapes. Investigation on going. In December 2006 the Investigators of Dili District arrested another serial rapist, known as “NINJA”, who is now at Becora Prison.
