UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 22 March 2007

The situation in Dili is still calm.

UNPOL has deployed 49 patrols since this morning and attended four incidents in total. Today, the only significant incident was the robbery of a woman's handbag outside of Landmark supermarket. A knife was used to cut the strap of the bag, and the woman obtained minor injuries to one finger.

Yesterday there were no significant security incidents in Dili, excluding those mentioned in the yesterday's briefing. Outside of Dili, 11 people were injured in a vehicle accident that took place at a political rally in Lautem. The causes of the accident are not thought to be suspicious.

The various UNPOL investigation units have been continuing their follow-up of cases. In the last 36 hours, the Vulnerable Persons Unit met with a witness in Bairo Pite to collect information about a suspect in a rape case. They are also making inquiries into the whereabouts of a missing mentally ill girl. Separately, the National Investigation Unit has gathered three more witness statements for two murders that occurred in Dili on the same day in October.

The Police advise that you should avoid traveling during the night to the most affected areas. Contact the police if you see anything suspicious or any kind of problems, and avoid remaining near any disturbances. Call 112 or 7230365 to contact the police 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

This has been a daily broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste, for the people of Timor-Leste.
