The 2006 Crisis

This site was inspired by the events that culminated in the tragic disintegration of the rule of law in 2006. UNPol was remobilised in response to the political violence and social tensions and this is an archive of the regular security reports.

UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 15 May 2007

SECURITY ADVISORY 15 MAY 2007 - FORTHCOMING EVENTS

All UN Staff Timor-Leste

Dear Colleagues,

Please note that a number of significant ceremonies and commemorations will be celebrated in Dili in the coming week or so.  These are:

15 -19 May     Solemn Ceremonies to Commemorate the Martyrs for National Liberation to take place at the Dili     National Stadium
20 May           Presidential Swearing in Ceremony
20 May           Restoration of Independence
21 May           UN Holiday (Restoration of Independence)

More precise details will be advised when known, but  large numbers of Timorese citizens, and expected high-level overseas delegations, will be traveling to Dili to take part in these events.

Traffic congestion and crowds can be expected and UNPOL will be putting in place traffic control measures.  SOC will liaise closely with the NOC and staff members are advised to check the status of routes.

Drivers are also reminded of the ongoing need to display courtesy and tolerance on the road, to observe traffic regulations, the needs of VIP movements and in particular to observe traffic signals.

Regards,

Peter Fry
Security Adviser
Timor-Leste
