UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 16 January 2007



Police has arrested the fifth suspect on the murder case in Liquica. In the districts the situation has been calm with no reports of violent incidents.

Yesterday morning, several weapons were seized in Kampung Alor area. In the afternoon and evening, there were some incidents reported in Fatuhada area, where the situation was tense with some rock throwing and fightings.

In Caicoli, when the police attended a fighting incident, the groups involved ran away but three people were arrested and charged for the possession of offensive weapons.

Today, the overall situation in Dili is reasonably calm. There have been outbreaks of fighting in the Caicoli and Mercado areas. Weapons including 12 metal bars, 4 slingshots and darts and 3 machetes were seized in Caicoli.

One hand made explosive device was thrown into a house at Manumeta Raihun, but did not detonate. The police stopped the explosion and recovered the device.
