The situation in and around Dili has been mostly calm for
the past 36 hours with no serious security incidents related to presidential campaigning.
There has been one reported homicide in Dili. A male was
fatally shot in the face with a dart. The National Investigation Unit is
investigating the death.
There was also one report of arson at a house near the
Australian Embassy that is believed to be related to gang violence.
Today, UNPol confirmed two incidents of a reported four. One
was a rock being thrown at a UN vehicle in the Banana Road / Delta Road area.
Both incidents involved rock throwing and while there was minor property damage
there were no injuries.
In the districts, political campaigning in Aileu, Ainaro,
and Baucauyesterday passed without incident. In Viqueque, youths tried to
disrupt the political rally of candidate Fernando De Aroujo, but were
restrained by PNTL and UNPol officers. The rally continued peacefully.
Separately, at around 2030hrs in Maliana, an UNPol Officer died from what was
believed to be a heart attack after accompanying the Bobonaro District Commander
to a mud slide.
The Major Crime Investigation Unit successfully completed a
two-day operation to locate and arrest the suspect of a murder that took place
in March in Kuluhun, Dili. Reports on the incidents are being submitted to the
Prosecutor's Office.
The Police advise that you should avoid traveling during the
night to the most affected areas. Contact the police if you see anything
suspicious or any kind of problems, and avoid remaining near any disturbances.
