The 2006 Crisis

This site was inspired by the events that culminated in the tragic disintegration of the rule of law in 2006. UNPol was remobilised in response to the political violence and social tensions and this is an archive of the regular security reports.

UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 30 March 2007

The situation in Dili has been calm over the past 24 hours.

Early this morning in Dili at around 0340hrs, an unidentified number of people threw rocks at Tasi Tolu Police Station. UNPOL and the Portuguese Formed Police Unit responded and dispersed the crowd. No property damage occurred and no people were injured.

UNPOL received no other significant reports of disturbances within Dili today.

Outside of Dili yesterday, at about 1840hrs, a group of up to 100 people carrying machetes confronted the Police Compound in Liquica. The situation arose from an altercation between IDPs and the local villagers. UNPOL persuaded the crowd to disperse, and a Formed Police Unit will be dispatched to the town tomorrow.

Yesterday in a press conference, the SRSG Atul Khare expressed his happiness that the campaign for the Presidential Elections had so far gone very well, without any notable reports of violence and intimidation. He congratulated the people of Timor-Leste for this, remarking that it was a sign of their commitment to a peaceful democratic process.

The Police advise that you should avoid traveling during the night to the most affected areas. Contact the police if you see anything suspicious or any kind of problems, and avoid remaining near any disturbances. Call 112 or 7230365 to contact the police 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

This has been a daily broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste, for the people of Timor-Leste.
