UNPol in East Timor Security Briefing 26 November 2007



UNPol Daily Security Briefing  26 November 2007 - This is a broadcast of the UN Police in Timor-Leste to provide you with information about the security situation around the country.

The security situation in Timor-Leste is generally calm.

United Nations police officers working alongside their Timorese counterparts, and assisted by the International Security Forces (ISF) have completed a successful weapons recovery operation in the Dili district of Bairo Pite. Acting upon intelligence, "Operation Weapons Sweep" began last Wednesday and concluded on Saturday. An assortment of weapons ranging from bows, arrows, machetes, sling shots, knives, spears and homemade guns were recovered. Community officials also participated in the Operation by assisting police in searching homes. All houses were searched with the written authorization of their owners.

Today in Dili, police attended eleven incidents, including a demonstration by over 300 students outside of the Government Palace Building. The demonstration remained peaceful throughout. Police also arrested a man to the east of Becora for possession of a rifle.

The victim of an attempted murder that took place on Saturday in Fatuhada died yesterday in Dili hospital. Police have identified and arrested a suspect.

On Sunday, three UNPol vehicles were damaged whilst police were stopping a fight between two groups in Fatuhada. Five suspects were arrested.
